newy.com.au – Motorists across Newcastle and the Hunter have been warned to expect delays from Monday as vehicles carrying 80-metre wind turbine blades begin travelling from the Port of Newcastle to a wind farm near Wellington.
The blades will be transported along a 400-kilometre route to the Uungula Wind Farm development in the Central West Orana region. Other turbine components have been moved to the site since April, but these will be the first blades delivered.
Multiple oversize and overmass loads are expected to leave the port each week, although Transport for NSW says the number will vary. Departures are scheduled at night to limit disruption around Newcastle.
The route will take the loads along Industrial Drive, the Pacific and New England highways, John Renshaw Drive and the Hunter Expressway before continuing on the New England and Golden highways.
They will leave the Golden Highway at Saxa Road, east of Elong Elong, and travel via the Mitchell Highway, Goolma Road and Twelve Mile Road to the wind farm.
Transport for NSW said journey times were likely to increase as the slow-moving vehicles negotiated turns and intersections. Drivers could also face short delays where the loads pass through roadwork sites.
Motorists approaching or passing the loads have been urged to reduce their speed and exercise caution.
