newy.com.au – Safety upgrades and essential maintenance are under way across Newcastle’s five inland swimming pools ahead of their reopening for the warmer months.
Lambton Park War Memorial Swimming Centre will be the first to welcome swimmers back, reopening on 24 August 2026. Pools at Wallsend, Mayfield, Stockton and Beresfield will reopen from 26 September.
City of Newcastle acting executive manager community and recreation Donna McGovern, a former Commonwealth Games medallist, said the winter closures allowed crews to undertake a comprehensive maintenance program.
“We know how much our community values our inland pools as hubs of recreation, connection and education,” Ms McGovern said.
“Our teams carry out safety upgrades, freshen up the painted surfaces including non-slip areas, service plant and equipment, undertake plumbing repairs and complete pool tile and promenade maintenance.
“This ensures we can continue to provide safe, clean and enjoyable aquatic facilities, and enhance the longevity of these ageing community assets.”
The work varies according to the needs of each facility. At Lambton, crews are carrying out a major service of the popular splash park feature and installing new fencing around the waterslide.
Beresfield will receive playground maintenance and kiosk improvements, while new bench seating will be installed at Stockton to improve visitor comfort.
Wallsend’s 50-metre pool is being emptied this week so floor tiles can be repaired and expansion joints replaced. The empty pool shell will also undergo a detailed inspection, while pipe fittings will be replaced to reduce the risk of water leaking during power outages in the plant room.
Guttering repairs and security improvements will also be completed at Wallsend before swimmers return in September.
