newy.com.au – More than $9.2 million will be spent widening shoulders, installing safety barriers and improving line marking on Tomago Road under a new statewide road safety package.
The work will focus on curves along the busy state road, which links Port Stephens motorists with Newcastle Airport, the Tomago industrial precinct and the wider Hunter road network. The NSW government has not specified which sections will be upgraded or when construction will begin.
Tomago Road carries commuter, freight and visitor traffic and is one of 83 high-risk locations selected for upgrades under the next stage of the Towards Zero Safer Roads Program.
Port Stephens MP Kate Washington said investment in existing roads remained important as major projects, including the M1 Pacific Motorway extension, progressed.
“This investment is great news, with Tomago Road being a critical transport corridor in Port Stephens, connecting locals, workers and our visitors to the M1, Newcastle Airport and the Tomago industrial precinct,” Ms Washington said.
The state government will spend $230 million on the 83 projects, which include safety barriers, rumble strips, wider shoulders, intersection upgrades and new or improved pedestrian crossings.
The package forms part of a $2.8 billion road safety commitment over four years in the 2026-27 NSW Budget. The government says regional areas will receive 62 per cent of the state’s road safety funding during the financial year.
Roads and Regional Transport Minister Jenny Aitchison said the projects were intended to prevent crashes and reduce their severity.
“We’re investing in practical safety improvements where they’ll have the greatest impact, reducing the risk of serious crashes and saving lives across NSW,” she said.
