newy.com.au – A 40-year-old man has been charged with 26 offences after an alleged shoplifting incident at a Newcastle West supermarket led to a police pursuit on Wednesday morning.

Officers from Newcastle City Police District were called to the supermarket about 7.50am following reports of shoplifting in progress.

Police said officers found the man riding a bicycle along National Park Street. A foot pursuit followed after they attempted to stop him, and he was arrested and taken to Newcastle Police Station.

The man was charged with 23 counts of shoplifting, as well as trespass, custody of a knife in a public place as a subsequent offence, and hindering or resisting police.

He was refused bail and was due to appear before Bail Division Court 2 on Wednesday.
