newy.com.au – All 10 Lake Mac Libraries branches will open their doors for more than 25 free activities on Thursday, showcasing services that extend well beyond borrowing books.
The Open Doors, Open Books, Open Minds Library Open Day on 30 July will feature baby story-time sessions, family history experiences, technology programs and creative workshops, as well as opportunities to explore library spaces and services.
Held as part of Library and Information Week, the statewide initiative is led by the NSW Public Libraries Association in partnership with the State Library of NSW. It highlights the role of public libraries as community hubs for learning, creativity, technology access and social connection.
Lake Macquarie City Council Manager Arts, Culture and Tourism Jacqui Hemsley said the event aimed to challenge outdated perceptions of libraries.
“Our branches are so much more than a place to borrow books,” Ms Hemsley said.
“Across Lake Macquarie, people can access creative spaces such as our Textile Lab and Sound Lab, borrow equipment through the Library of Things, learn digital skills, research family history, attend exhibitions and take part in a huge range of community programs.”
The open day will also coincide with the first day of a new term of sound studio workshops at Windale Hub, bilyabayi.
Among those who have used the libraries’ creative facilities is cosplayer Andrew Needham, who has drawn on the Fab Lab’s resources to 3D-print parts for his outfits and now helps teach others to use its equipment.
“It’s an accessible way to fabricate designs without the need for a commercial business,” he said.
NSW Public Libraries Association president Councillor Romola Hollywood said libraries remained important spaces for participation and connection.
“They are welcoming spaces where people learn new skills, access technology, connect with others, explore local history, enjoy cultural experiences and participate in community life,” she said.
“Open Doors, Open Books, Open Minds reflects exactly what today’s public libraries do. Libraries open doors to opportunity, books to knowledge and minds to new ideas, skills and experiences.”
