newy.com.au – A key Medowie intersection will be widened and fitted with traffic lights as part of a $1.5 million upgrade intended to improve safety and traffic flow as the community grows.
The intersection of Ferodale Road and Peppertree Road will also receive a new pedestrian crossing, increasing its capacity and improving access for residents, commuters and local businesses.
The NSW Government will provide $1 million through the first round of its Faster Assessments Incentive Program, while Port Stephens Council will contribute $500,000.
Council is in the early design stages, further details to be provided to the community in the coming months.
The upgrade supports the recently endorsed Medowie Place Plan, which was developed with community input to guide the town’s future. Improving the local road network to ease congestion, increase safety and support growth was identified as a key priority during consultation.
Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington said the project would help the road network keep pace with population growth and prepare the area for Medowie’s new public high school, which is due to open in 2027.
“Upgrading this busy intersection will improve traffic flow, make journeys safer for local families and help ensure our road network keeps pace with population growth,” Ms Washington said.
Port Stephens Mayor Leah Anderson said the project was an important step towards delivering the council’s plans for the town centre.
“This million-dollar funding injection is a massive win for Medowie. It marks a key first step in the realisation of Council’s recently endorsed Town Centre Masterplan, which was developed in partnership with the community,” Cr Anderson said.
“Upgrading the intersection will improve traffic flow and movement in the area and create a safer pedestrian and cycling environment.”
Central Ward councillor Jason Wells said the intersection was an important gateway to Medowie’s shopping area and a future recreation space.
“It will lead directly to a town centre that is safer, more connected and better equipped to meet the needs of our growing community,” Cr Wells said.
The Medowie project is one of 30 infrastructure projects across NSW to receive funding through the latest state investment. The Faster Assessments Incentive Program forms part of a $54 million commitment to help councils deliver roads, parks and community facilities supporting new housing.
