newy.com.au – A 21-year-old man has been charged with five offences after a 75-year-old woman died in a head-on crash near Greta and the other driver allegedly left the scene on foot.
Emergency services were called to the New England Highway at Harpers Hill about 8.50am on Monday, 20 July, following reports a hatchback and utility had collided.
The crash blocked traffic in both directions. NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the hatchback driver at the scene, but she could not be revived.
Police allege the utility driver left on foot before he was arrested nearby a short time later. He was taken to John Hunter Hospital for assessment and mandatory testing.
Officers from the Port Stephens-Hunter Police District established a crime scene, which was forensically examined by the Crash Investigation Unit.
Police attended the hospital on Tuesday afternoon and spoke with the man before charging him with dangerous driving occasioning death, negligent driving occasioning death, negligent driving where no death or grievous bodily harm occurs, failing to stop and assist after a vehicle impact causing death, and not keeping left of a dividing line.
He was refused bail and is due to appear before Bail Division Court 2 on Wednesday.
