newy.com.au – Port Stephens students starting university or TAFE can apply for $2,000 scholarships through the council’s 2026-27 Mayoral Academic Scholarship Program.
Now in its 17th year, the program supports students from the Port Stephens local government area as they begin tertiary study. The scholarships are funded by local businesses and can help cover expenses such as textbooks, laptops, equipment and accommodation.
Port Stephens Mayor Leah Anderson said the program invested in local young people while strengthening the region’s future.
“Every student’s journey starts with ambition, determination and potential and the Mayoral Academic Scholarship Program helps local students take the next step towards achieving their academic and career goals,” Mayor Anderson said.
“Starting university or TAFE is an exciting milestone, but it can also bring significant costs. Whether it’s purchasing textbooks, a laptop, equipment or contributing towards accommodation, these scholarships provide practical support when students need it most.”
More than 200 Port Stephens students have received support through the program since 2010. Cr Anderson thanked the local businesses involved, saying their contributions were helping to develop the region’s next generation of leaders, professionals and skilled workers.
The program also supports the council’s Economic Development Strategy by encouraging workforce development and lifelong learning, while helping students form connections with local employers.
Applicants must live in the Port Stephens local government area and be commencing their first full year of a diploma or higher qualification at an accredited TAFE or university.
Applications will be accepted from Tuesday, 21 July until Friday, 27 November 2026. Eligibility criteria and applications are available at pscouncil.info/MAS.
