newy.com.au – A 33-year-old man will face court on Friday after being charged over alleged assaults on police and frontline workers following a crash at Kotara.
Police were called to Charlestown Road about 8.10pm on Wednesday, 8 July, after reports of a crash. At the scene, officers were told a ute had lost control, crashed into a parked vehicle, then gone through the fence of a home and into a tree.
Several members of the public stopped to help the driver, but police allege they were assaulted. An officer and police dog attached to the Dog Unit arrived a short time later and were also allegedly assaulted by the driver.
Police arrested the man with the assistance of responding firefighters and paramedics. He was taken to John Hunter Hospital for treatment under police guard.
A senior constable was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics for lacerations to his face.
About 7.45pm on Thursday, police attended John Hunter Hospital to speak with the man. He was charged with seven offences, including assaulting police, hindering or resisting police, assaulting a frontline emergency worker, driving recklessly or in a manner dangerous, failing to give particulars to another driver, and affray.
The man was refused bail to appear before Bail Division Court 2 on Friday, 10 July.
