newy.com.au – Lambton Fire Station has received a new $1.3 million Fire and Rescue NSW rescue pumper designed to improve emergency response and firefighter safety across Newcastle and the Hunter.
The new generation truck is purpose-built for rescue work and fitted with updated technology, including improved equipment storage and an innovative carousel system that gives crews quicker access to rescue gear.
The carousel houses three new battery-powered cutting tools that can be accessed from both sides of the truck tray, reducing handling risks for firefighters. Fire and Rescue NSW says the move from hydraulic to battery-powered rescue tools will allow crews to begin using the equipment faster at incidents and give them greater manoeuvrability.
The appliance can seat up to five firefighters, with the cabin designed so crews can exit the truck already wearing breathing apparatus, saving additional seconds during a response.
Emergency Services Minister Jihad Dib said the truck was part of the State Government’s investment in modern emergency services equipment.
“This new $1.3 million truck is an example of how the Minns Labor Government is investing in modern trucks and equipment so our firefighters can do their job, safely, quickly and effectively when the community needs them most,” Mr Dib said.
“It’s not just a new fire truck – it’s smarter equipment, faster response times and better protection for both firefighters and the communities they serve.
“This is a great example of how we are working with firefighters, to provide them with the fit-for-purpose equipment, helping them do their job better and more efficiently.”
Member for Wallsend Sonia Hornery said firefighters responded to a wide range of emergencies across the region.
“Our firefighters respond to a wide range of incidents across Newcastle and Wallsend, from house fires to road crashes. This new Rescue Pumper will help crews respond more efficiently while improving firefighter safety,” Ms Hornery said.
“The Minns Labor Government is continuing to invest in emergency services capability because communities across Newcastle and the Hunter deserve to feel safe and know that help is there when it’s most needed.”
FRNSW Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell said firefighters had been consulted during the truck’s design process.
“When FRNSW first looked at this truck’s design, we consulted our firefighters about what improvements they required,” Commissioner Fewtrell said.
“As a result, the instant access to equipment will save precious seconds in an emergency.”
The new rescue pumper is part of more than $105 million allocated by the State Government for FRNSW infrastructure and fleet this financial year.
