newy.com.au – Maitland City Council has installed 30 Return and Earn collection units at selected public bins across the city, giving residents and visitors more places to leave eligible drink containers for recycling.
The rollout, supported by the NSW Government through the Return and Earn scheme, is designed to make it easier for community members to collect containers from public spaces and return them for the 10-cent refund.
“This simple initiative makes it easier for people to keep eligible drink containers out of landfill and support recycling in our public spaces,” Maitland Mayor Philip Penfold said.
The new infrastructure includes five tray units at The Levee, two at the High Street and Lawes Street precinct in East Maitland, and one at Swan Street, Morpeth. Another 22 larger-capacity baskets have been installed at selected locations across Maitland.
The units complement existing bins and recycling infrastructure in high-traffic areas, with signage showing where eligible containers can be placed.
Containers accepted through Return and Earn must be empty and uncrushed, include the barcode and lid, and display the 10-cent refund symbol. More information, including installation locations, is available on the council’s website at mait.city/BinBaskets.
