newy.com.au – A 50-year-old man has been arrested after police were told two people had been threatened with a knife during a neighbour dispute at a Mayfield unit.
Police were called to Carrington Street about 10.30am on Sunday following reports of the dispute. Officers from Newcastle City Police District attended and were told a man had threatened two people with a knife. No injuries were reported.
As officers made inquiries, police said the man barricaded himself inside a unit. Specialist police, including Police Negotiators, were called to the scene and a perimeter was established.
During the operation, officers wearing helmets and protective vests were seen outside the premises, where the man could be heard speaking loudly to police. Cars were stopped from entering the street, while some nearby residents were allowed to park and walk back to their homes. Police tape was later placed at both ends of the road.
Members of the public were asked to avoid the area during the operation, but NSW Police told newy.com.au there was no ongoing risk to the community.
Police also said an earlier “green light corridor” involving ambulances and police vehicles travelling through Mayfield was not related to the Carrington Street operation.
About 9.35pm, police entered the unit and arrested the man. He was taken to Newcastle Police Station before being taken to the Mater Hospital for treatment.
Police said inquiries were ongoing.
