Three arrested, motorbikes seized after Mayfield gathering

newy.com.au – Three men have been arrested and another four motorbikes have been seized as police continue to investigate alleged unsafe and illegal behaviour at a large gathering in Mayfield.

Police were called to a park on Ingall Street about 1pm on Sunday, June 14, after reports a large crowd had gathered. Officers found between 150 and 200 people in the park, while a further 30 to 40 people were allegedly riding unregistered trail bikes through parkland and nearby streets.

Streets in the area were closed and traffic was redirected because of safety concerns. A woman was arrested after an alleged assault in the park area and was later released pending further inquiries. Two unregistered motorbikes were seized on the day and are undergoing forensic examination.

Newcastle City Police District established Operation Horizon to investigate the incident. Following extensive inquiries, officers from the district and the Northern Region Operations Support Group executed a search warrant at a Wallsend home about 7am on Friday.

During the search, police allegedly seized four motorbikes, a scooter, a taser, 0.55 grams of methamphetamine, helmets, clothing and electronics.

Three men, aged 20, 22 and 25, were arrested and taken to Waratah Police Station. All three were refused police bail and are due to appear before Bail Division Court 6 on Saturday.

The 25-year-old man was charged with seven offences, including riot, destroying or damaging property valued at more than $2000 and not more than $5000, goods in personal custody suspected of being stolen, driving a conveyance taken without the owner’s consent, possessing a prohibited drug, never having been licensed to drive a vehicle on a road, and three or more people using violence to cause fear.

The 22-year-old man was charged with six offences, including riot, destroying or damaging property, reckless or furious driving or driving at a speed or in a manner dangerous, goods in personal custody suspected of being stolen, never having been licensed to drive on a road, and three or more people using violence to cause fear.

The 20-year-old man was charged with seven offences, including riot, destroying or damaging property, reckless or furious driving or driving at a speed or in a manner dangerous, goods in personal custody suspected of being stolen, being carried in a conveyance taken without the owner’s consent, never having been licensed, and three or more people using violence to cause fear.
