newy.com.au – Port Stephens will receive $187,000 from the State Government to build eight new bus shelters and upgrade six existing stops under a regional public transport infrastructure program.
The funding has been awarded through the latest round of the Country Passenger Transport Infrastructure Grants Scheme, which helps councils improve local bus stop infrastructure across regional NSW.
The works are aimed at making bus stops safer, more accessible and more comfortable for passengers, with improvements including shelters, seating, signage and accessibility features.
The 2025-26 round of the scheme will fund 219 projects across 31 regional local government areas, including new shelters and upgrades to existing bus stops.
Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington said the investment would support a broad range of public transport users across the area.
“People in Port Stephens deserve public transport infrastructure that is safe, comfortable and reliable. These 8 new and 6 upgraded bus shelters mean commuters will have better shelter from the weather, safer access and more accessible facilities while waiting for their bus,” she said.
“Whether it’s students travelling to school, seniors heading to appointments or locals getting to work, these improvements will help people stay connected to the services and support they need.”
Port Stephens Mayor Leah Anderson said the funding would deliver practical improvements for the community.
“This funding will help us make simple but visible improvements to several bus shelters along with installing entirely new bus shelters across Port Stephens, making a big difference in the daily lives of our residents and visitors,” she said.
Port Stephens West Ward Councillor Giacomo Arnott said the upgrades would help people who relied on buses in difficult weather.
“Whether it’s rain, sun or blistering wind, locals should be able to be protected from the elements when they are waiting for a bus,” he said.
“These new bus shelters and upgrades will make a huge difference for families, school kids and older members of our community who rely on public transport to get around.”
