newy.com.au – Maitland Showground will receive council-backed planning, repairs and event support under a new three-year partnership between Maitland City Council and the Hunter River Agricultural and Horticultural Association.
The agreement is aimed at supporting the long-term future of the landmark venue, with both organisations to work on sustainable improvements across the site and its facilities for the broader community.
Priorities identified under the partnership include a landscape master plan, road and pathway upgrades, ongoing pothole repairs and continued sponsorship for major events including the Maitland Show.
The showground, which covers almost 20 hectares and is owned and managed by the Association, attracts more than 400,000 visitors each year. It hosts events every week, ranging from harness racing and camping to the Maitland Community Markets.
Hunter River Agricultural and Horticultural Association president Margaret Enright said “the agreement will help the showground to improve visitor experiences for both locals and tourists.”
“By working with Council to deliver key improvements to the site, we can ensure a bright future at Maitland Showground and continue to host amazing events that draw big crowds.”
The partnership will also see Maitland Showground become a major accommodation provider for next year’s 40th anniversary of the Burton Automotive Hunter Valley Steamfest and 20th Biennial National Rally, which is expected to bring thousands of visitors to Maitland.
Maitland City Council general manager Jeff Smith said “we’re proud to work in partnership with the Association to support the showground for the future.”
“Maitland Showground is an icon of our city and we want to see it thrive for many years to come,” Mr Smith said.
“By working together, we can create more opportunities for local events, bring greater economic benefits to Maitland and deliver an improved showground experience for our wider community.”
Pending other commitments, the council will allocate available staff and resources to support ongoing planning, improvements and operations at the showground as part of the three-year program of works.
