newy.com.au – Raymond Terrace will host a street march, family fun day and flag-raising ceremony as Port Stephens marks NAIDOC Week and this year’s theme, “50 Years of Deadly”.
Port Stephens Council is inviting residents to take part in celebrations recognising the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, with events planned in partnership with the Aboriginal Strategic Committee, Worimi and Karuah Local Aboriginal Land Councils, Wahroonga Aboriginal Corporation, NSW Police and RAAF.
The celebrations will begin early with the annual Street March and Fun Day at Riverside Park, Raymond Terrace, from 10am on Thursday 25 June. The free family-friendly event will include a Welcome to Country, Smoking Ceremony, music and dance, community stalls, activities and a free barbecue.
The official NAIDOC Week Flag Raising Ceremony will be held at the Port Stephens Council Administration Building in Raymond Terrace on Monday 6 July, with arrivals from 8.30am for a 9am start. The ceremony will include a Worimi Welcome to Country, Smoking Ceremony, flag raising and speeches, followed by morning tea.
Mayor Leah Anderson said NAIDOC Week was an opportunity for the community to learn, reflect and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture while strengthening connections across Port Stephens.
“NAIDOC Week is for everyone, and these events are an opportunity for our community to come together to celebrate culture, connection and the important contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples,” Mayor Anderson said.
“Council is proud to stand alongside our local Aboriginal communities and partners to support celebrations that strengthen cultural connection, promote reconciliation and create opportunities for people to learn from one another,” Mayor Anderson added.
Mayor Anderson said the events also reflected Council’s ongoing commitment to recognising and supporting local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
“These events are an important opportunity to celebrate local culture, strengthen relationships and recognise the contribution Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples make to our community,” Mayor Anderson said.
“We encourage everyone to come along, get involved and celebrate together,” Mayor Anderson added.
