newy.com.au – Maitland Grossmann High School will be relocated and expanded to a larger site by 2030, with the NSW Government promising new purpose-built facilities for up to 1,500 students.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Education and Early Learning Prue Car announced the plan on Wednesday with Maitland MP Jenny Aitchison, saying funding for the relocation would be included in the 2026-27 NSW Budget.
The school will continue operating from its current site while the new campus is planned and built, giving students continuity of learning. The government said further details, including the new location, would be released later this year after commercial negotiations for the site were finalised.
The relocation follows refurbishment and revitalisation works at the existing campus after the closure of Block E. Completed works include new covered walkways, shade structures and outdoor seating, a vocational education and training hospitality kitchen, replacement timber retaining walls and fresh external paintwork.
Ms Car said Maitland’s growth required investment in local public schools.
“Maitland families are watching their community grow every day, and the Minns Labor Government is ensuring we support that growth by delivering world-class new and upgraded schools in growing neighbourhoods,” she said.
“The relocation and expansion of Maitland Grossmann High School on a new site will ensure the next generation of Maitland students have access to the world class public education they deserve.”
Ms Aitchison said the school had an important place in Maitland’s history and had outgrown its current site.
“A brand new site will ensure current students get to continue their learning journey without the disruption of construction, while we build Maitland’s first 21st century public high school,” she said.
The design process for the new campus will honour the school’s 140-year legacy and heritage.
Maitland Grossmann High School principal Neil Fara said the announcement recognised years of advocacy by the school community.
“This investment is a powerful acknowledgment of the advocacy of our students, families, staff and broader community, who have worked tirelessly over the last three years to ensure Maitland Grossmann High School’s future is supported,” he said.
“It reflects the strength of our growing community and ensures future generations of young people will have access to world-class learning environments and opportunities close to home.”
The 2026-27 Budget will also include a new public school and preschool at Chisholm. Other Hunter school projects in the government’s pipeline include a new public preschool, primary school and high school at Huntlee, the redevelopment of Gillieston Public School, an upgrade of Thornton Public School, the new Medowie High School and 12 new public preschools across the broader Hunter region.
