newy.com.au – Students at Mount View High School will receive federal support for a STEM racing program as part of a $1.6 million grants round aimed at getting more school students into hands-on science, technology, engineering and maths.
The school’s STEM Racing Program is among more than 100 projects across Australia to share funding through the Sponsorship Grants for Student Science Engagement and International Competitions.
The grants are part of the Inspiring Australia – Science Engagement Program and are designed to reduce financial barriers for school students taking part in STEM events, activities and competitions in Australia and overseas.
This year’s supported activities include the 2026 Greenpower Race Series, where students design, build, test and race electric vehicles, and the UNSW SunSprint Model Solar Challenge, which involves creating and competing with solar-powered vehicles. Students will also be supported to take part in the internationally recognised Conrad Challenge, hosted by the SPACE Center Houston, where participants develop solutions to real-world problems.
Minister for Industry and Innovation and Minister for Science Tim Ayres said the grants were aimed at building the skills students would need in emerging industries.
“Australia needs more people with the skills to work in the industries that will shape our future, from renewable energy and advanced manufacturing to AI, robotics and cyber security.
“Programs like this help young people get hands-on experience in STEM, build practical skills, and see the opportunities available to them in those growing sectors. That’s good for students, and it’s good for Australia’s future.”
Hunter MP and Special Envoy for Men’s Health Dan Repacholi said practical programs could help students who learnt best outside a traditional classroom setting.
“Not every young person learns best from a textbook. Programs like this give students the chance to get stuck into hands-on projects, solve real problems and see where STEM skills can take them.
“As someone who’s worked with my hands, I know how important it is for young people to have opportunities to learn practical skills and build confidence.
“These grants will help local students try new things, work as part of a team and get experience that could open doors to great careers in the future.
“It’s great to see students at Mount View High School getting the chance to be involved in programs that challenge them, inspire them and show them what’s possible.”
