newy.com.au – A draft master plan for a continuous coastal walking trail linking Caves Beach to Budgewoi will go on public exhibition from 12 June to 17 July, giving residents, walkers and other interested community members a chance to comment on the proposal.
The proposed trail corridor would run through coastal suburbs including Budgewoi, Lake Munmorah, Catherine Hill Bay and Caves Beach, crossing both the Central Coast and Lake Macquarie local government areas.
Most of the proposed route is within Wallarah National Park and Munmorah State Conservation Area. The plan is intended to guide the development of a safe and sustainable walking trail that connects people with the area’s natural landscapes and supports nature-based recreation.
Proposed features include improved access for walking and connecting with nature, educational signage and places to rest. The master plan is being developed by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service in partnership with Transport for NSW, with current funding supporting development of the draft plan.
NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service Director for Hunter Central Coast Kylie Yeend said the proposal set out a long-term vision for the coastal link.
“This draft master plan sets out an exciting vision for a coastal trail with ocean views, coastal bushland and places to stop and take in the scenery,” Ms Yeend said.
“It’s great to be progressing this election commitment and planning a trail that will benefit locals from Budgewoi to Caves Beach, as well as visitors.”
Transport for NSW Deputy Secretary Trudi Mares said the consultation was part of broader work to improve walking opportunities across the state.
“Spending time outdoors is one of the best things you can do for your mental and physical health, and this draft master plan is an important step towards another fantastic coastal trail for our state,” Ms Mares said.
“The NSW Government has launched a consultation that will inform the development of the state’s first ever Walking Strategy to improve the way government and councils plan, fund and design public spaces to encourage walking.”
Community members can review the draft master plan online from 12 June and provide feedback during the exhibition period. Drop-in sessions will also be held, with details available on the Caves Beach to Budgewoi Coastal Trail website.
