newy.com.au – A campaign to have Link Road Forest declared a national park has begun a 12-week push to gather 20,000 signatures and force a debate in the NSW Upper House.
Greens MLC Sue Higginson launched the Link Road Forest Campaign’s parliamentary ePetition after riding through the forest with supporters and seeing the area first-hand.
“This is home to some of Australia’s most unique but threatened wildlife. This is a place that needs to be protected. This would be good for communities, good for the environment and of course we know that, right now, all of our communities really need these essential, natural green areas for our wellbeing,” Ms Higginson said.
“I will do whatever I can working with the community to get the Government to see reason and to support this call,” she said.
The petition will remain live on the parliamentary website for 12 weeks. If it reaches 20,000 signatures in that time, the proposal for Link Road Forest to be made a national park will be debated in the state’s Upper House.
Link Road Forest Campaign spokesperson Ian McKenzie said the community strongly supported the push to protect the area.
“It is vital that our elected representatives listen to the community,” Mr McKenzie said.
“The community is very strong in its support for getting a national park at Link Road Forest. Now is the time to show our politicians that we care, care for wildlife, care for threatened species, and care for people – people now but also all future generations,” he said.
