newy.com.au – Cessnock City councillors have voted to freeze their annual fees at 2024/25 levels for the rest of the current council term, after a motion from Councillor Quintin King passed at this week’s council meeting.
The decision means councillors will not take any increases to their annual fees, despite the option being available under the Local Government Remuneration Tribunal determination.
Cr King said the move was intended to reflect the financial pressure being felt by households, businesses and ratepayers across the Cessnock Local Government Area.
“At a time when many households are dealing with rising living costs, it is important that elected representatives demonstrate restraint and lead by example,” Cr King said.
“This decision shows that Council understands the financial challenges facing our community and is committed to putting residents first.”
Cr King said the pay freeze was also aimed at reinforcing public confidence in the council’s approach to financial management.
“Freezing councillor fees will not solve every financial challenge, but it sends a clear message that we are prepared to share in the responsibility and make sensible decisions on behalf of the community,” he said.
The freeze will remain in place until the end of the current council term.
