newy.com.au – A 23-year-old man has been charged after police investigated an alleged bottle shop stealing and armed robbery at Hamilton in Newcastle.
Police were first called to a bottle shop on Tudor Street about 8.45pm on Monday, following reports two men had entered the premises and allegedly stolen seven bottles of spirits.
About 2am on Tuesday, officers were called to a service station, also on Tudor Street, after two men allegedly entered the business and threatened a staff member with a screwdriver before leaving with cash and cigarettes.
Newcastle City Police District officers established a crime scene and began inquiries into the two incidents.
Police said they attempted to stop a man on Gordon Street, Hamilton, about 10.10am on Tuesday. The 23-year-old was arrested on Elcho Street after a foot pursuit.
During a search, police allegedly found 18 pouches of tobacco, two packets of cigarettes and bolt cutters. The man was taken to Newcastle Police Station and charged with larceny, stalk/intimidate intend fear physical etc harm (personal), and robbery armed with offensive weapon.
He was refused bail to appear before Bail Division Court 2 on Wednesday. Police said inquiries into the incidents were continuing.
