Two more teens charged over alleged Belmont bus assault

newy.com.au – Two more 16-year-old boys have been charged after a 49-year-old man was allegedly knocked unconscious and seriously injured during an assault on a bus at Belmont.

Emergency services were called to the Pacific Highway just after midday on Sunday, May 3, after reports of an assault on board a bus. Officers from Lake Macquarie Police District and the Police Transport Command attended and were told a group of people had entered the bus before an argument began with the man.

Police allege the group repeatedly assaulted the man as they were getting off the bus, leaving him unconscious. He was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for head and facial injuries before being taken to John Hunter Hospital for further treatment. Police said he has since been released from hospital.

A short time after the incident, nine youths were found and arrested at a fast-food restaurant in Belmont. Seven were released pending further investigation, while two 16-year-old boys were charged and remain before the courts.

Following further inquiries, another two 16-year-old boys were arrested at Toronto and Belmont police stations. Each was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm in company. They are due to appear separately before a children’s court on Monday, May 18, and Monday, June 15.

Police said a 12-year-old boy was also dealt with under the Young Offenders Act.
