LGNSW brings 2026 Destination and Visitor Economy Conference to Maitland

newy.com.au – Maitland will host LGNSW’s flagship 2026 Destination and Visitor Economy Conference from May 27 to 29, with the event set to bring together elected representatives, council staff and tourism industry leaders from across NSW.

LGNSW president and Inner West mayor Darcy Byrne said councils were central to the success of the state’s visitor economy. “Local government plays a key role in shaping vibrant visitor experiences, from the assets we manage to the places we design. Tourism creates jobs, supports local businesses and strengthens communities across NSW,” Mayor Byrne said.

Mayor Byrne said the conference came at a time when local economies were beginning to feel the effects of fuel insecurity. “There’s no denying that we are living in troubling times and local economies are starting to feel the brunt of fuel insecurity.

“We’re all hearing reports of trips and holidays being cancelled due to these concerns so now more than ever, we need to share ideas and experiences, to hear about innovation and new approaches in the tourism sector.

“This conference equips councils with practical tools to turn ambition into action and deliver real economic outcomes for their communities.”

Hosted by Maitland City Council, the conference will examine emerging travel trends and global marketing, short-term rentals, the reuse of council assets as visitor experiences and opportunities linked to new airport developments. The 2026 program will include representatives from Destination NSW and Tourism Australia, along with event creative leader Gill Minervini.

Delegates are also expected to hear about the Hunter region’s strengths in agritourism, arts and culture, placemaking, heritage, hospitality and handcrafted experiences. The NSW Top Tourism Town Awards will be presented during the program, which will conclude on May 29 with the announcement of the 2027 host. Registrations close on May 15.
