newy.com.au – A new $3.1 million amenities building has opened at Max McMahon Oval in Rutherford, giving sporting clubs in Maitland’s west access to upgraded facilities for the coming season.

Funded by the Australian Government under the Investing in Our Communities Program, with contributions from Maitland City Council, the building includes four unisex changerooms, accessible public amenities, a canteen, first aid and referee rooms, a timekeeping room and tiered seating.

Maitland Mayor Philip Penfold said the new facilities “are a game-changer for local clubs and players.”

“We’re proud to deliver these new and improved amenities for sporting groups in west Maitland, particularly Maitland Saints AFL Club and Western Suburbs Cricket Club, who helped us come up with the most suitable design and were instrumental in securing the grant funding,” Mayor Penfold said.

He said both sports were growing in popularity in the community and the new building would give clubs the facilities needed for future growth.

Federal Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson said she made a $3 million commitment to the project during the 2022 election because of the oval’s importance to families and sporting clubs in Maitland’s west.

“This commitment is now delivered – with modern, accessible amenities that support players, officials and spectators alike. It’s an investment in participation, community pride and the future of our local sport,” Ms Swanson said.

The facilities will be open to local clubs for training and match days and are expected to improve accessibility for players, officials and the wider community.
