newy.com.au – 53-year-old Yury Skrynnik from Stockton has been charged with attempted murder after police allege a 69-year-old musician was stabbed several times at a Merewether sports club on Sunday night.

Emergency services were called to the Merewether Bowling Club on Caldwell Street, Merewether, about 7.40pm on Sunday, March 22, following reports of an assault. Newcastle City Police were told the 69-year-old man, who was working as a musician at the club, was allegedly stabbed several times near the entrance by a man believed to be known to him.

The injured man, Newcastle musician Greg Bryce from Newcastle Band DV8, was treated by a doctor at the scene before NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived and continued treatment. He was then taken to John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition with stab wounds to his chest and back.

Police said the other man allegedly left the area before officers arrived. A crime scene was established and detectives from Newcastle City Police District began an investigation into the incident.

Following inquiries, detectives arrested a 53-year-old man (Yury Skrynnik) at a home in Stockton about 1.40am on Monday, March 23. He was taken to Newcastle Police Station, where he was charged with attempt murder (DV) and contravene prohibition/restriction in AVO (Domestic).

Grant Walmsley, co-founder and former guitarist of The Screaming Jets, said that Greg Bryce was “doing ok”, was under “great care” and was being “well looked after” by the hospital team and family. He said Bryce was in a “good state”, knew and felt “everyone’s well wishes and love”, but now needed “quiet and space to heal”.

Greg Bryce’s management, GENR8 Entertainment, said Bryce’s family had advised he was “doing OK” but needed time to rest and heal, and asked for privacy.

He was refused bail and was due to appear before Bail Division Court 2 on Monday.
