newy.com.au – Two Charlestown residents have been recognised as the electorate’s 2026 Local Seniors of the Year, with Member for Charlestown Jodie Harrison presenting awards to John Hoskin and Jennie Brice for their contributions to the community.
Mrs Brice, 94, was honoured for decades of service through the Country Women’s Association. A member of the Belmont Branch since 1994, she has held a range of leadership and patronage roles and continues to support the organisation by welcoming new members, officiating at events and helping with set-up and clean-up.
Mr Hoskin, 69, was recognised for his long-standing commitment to archery and his voluntary work in the local community. Since moving to the area in 2017, he has volunteered extensively with Westlakes Archers, mentoring students at the international level and running regular beginners’ coaching sessions for club members and the wider community.
The awards were presented during the 2026 NSW Seniors Festival, which ran from March 2 to March 15. Nearly 50 NSW Government-run and sponsored events were held across the state as part of the festival, which celebrates and supports older people through activities designed for seniors.
Now in its 68th year, the festival is a key NSW Government initiative aimed at recognising seniors and helping them remain active and engaged in their communities.
Ms Harrison said the awards recognised the impact seniors continued to have across the electorate.
“The NSW Seniors Festival is about celebrating the people who make our communities better places to live, and it was an honour to present these awards to two outstanding Charlestown locals who continue to give so much to others,” she said.
“Jennie and John’s dedication and willingness to volunteer their time is truly inspiring and highlights how much seniors contribute to the strength and spirit of our local community.”
