Gearbox failure causes major oil spill and traffic delays on Newcastle Road at Wallsend

newy.com.au – A large oil spill caused hazardous conditions and significant traffic delays on Newcastle Road at Wallsend after a vehicle transporter suffered a mechanical failure about noon on Wednesday, 11 March 2026.

Fire and Rescue NSW Station 484 Wallsend crews responded to the incident after the truck’s gearbox failed, spreading a large amount of oil across the roadway. Eastbound traffic was heavily affected while emergency crews worked to make the area safe.

Firefighters helped manage the scene and contain the spill, while City of Newcastle attended with street sweepers to clean the road and restore safe driving conditions.

Authorities also thanked the community for its patience while the incident was being resolved.
