newy.com.au – A two-level townhouse on Triumph Way (near the corner of Fowler and Coady streets) in Hamilton South was destroyed by fire in the early hours of Saturday 28 February 2026. One woman was taken to the Mater Hospital.

Six fire trucks were sent to the blaze, where neighbours described a dangerous scene and efforts to stop the fire spreading.

A neighbour said the fire, which they became aware of at about 5.30am, “completely gutted” the townhouse next door. She said no one was killed, but warned the structure was “extremely dangerous, unstable”.

The neighbour said her and her partner, Kristy, fought the fire from their backyard with a hose before firefighters arrived, and that Kristy was later taken to hospital with smoke inhalation and minor burns.

“My partner, Kristy, was the only person taken by ambulance to the Mater hospital for smoke inhalation & minor face burns (more sunburnt looking as opposed to blisters) from fighting the fire from my backyard with my hose,” the neighbour said.

She said Kristy has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which “magnified all her symptoms”.

NSW Ambulance told newy.com.au that paramedics attended the fire about 5.45am and transported one patient to the Mater.

Fire and Rescue said crews also searched a neighbouring property after reports people were next door, and evacuated those occupants from the building.

NSW Police said it was “too early to say if the fire is being treated as suspicious as the building is structurally unsound, preventing fire investigators from going inside to have look”.

Officers from Newcastle City Police District have commenced an investigation.
