Woman charged after alleged knife assault on Newcastle taxi driver

newy.com.au – A 39-year-old woman has been charged after a taxi driver was allegedly assaulted in Hamilton, Newcastle, on Monday morning.

Emergency services were called to Denison Street about 9.20am on Monday 16 February 2026 following reports of an assault, with police told at the scene the driver had been attacked by a customer.

The man was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for minor injuries to his hands.

Police seized a knife and a mobile phone at the location, and officers from Newcastle City Police District began inquiries and patrolled the area.

About 9.45am, the woman was arrested on Cleary Street, Hamilton, and taken to Newcastle Police Station.

She was charged with armed with intent to commit an indictable offence, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and custody of knife in a public place (first offence).

The woman was granted strict conditional bail and is due to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Thursday 26 February 2026.
