Man charged after alleged attempted car break-in at Birmingham Gardens

newy.com.au – A man has been charged after police were called to Birmingham Gardens in Newcastle following reports three males allegedly tried to enter a parked vehicle.

Newcastle City Police District officers said the incident began about 1.50am on 9 January 2026, with inquiries continuing to locate a third male.

Police said they were called to Naughton Avenue and attended a short time later, locating two males on Lee Crescent.

During a search, officers allegedly found and seized debit cards in different names, sealed packets of cigarettes, a knife, sunglasses, keys, cash and a laptop, police said.

The males, aged 17 and 18, were taken to Waratah Police Station, where the 18-year-old was charged with goods in personal custody suspected being stolen, larceny and custody of knife in a public place.

He was granted strict conditional bail to appear before Newcastle Local Court on Thursday 26 March 2026, while the 17-year-old will be dealt with under the Young Offenders Act.

Police said investigations were ongoing to identify and locate the third male allegedly involved.
