newy.com.au – Fire and Rescue NSW crews have put out a small fire at Merewether High School after multiple Triple Zero calls reported smoke at the site on Chatham Street.

The school was evacuated and fire quickly contained, allowing students and staff to return to buildings not affected by the fire.

Fire and Rescue NSW said it received multiple 000 calls about 10.50am after smoke was seen issuing from an external air conditioning unit.

Crews from Newcastle, Lambton and Merewether attended, with four fire trucks, 16 firefighters and an on-duty inspector dispatched to the school.

Fire and Rescue NSW media spokesperson Acting Superintendent Kevin Smith said firefighters were on scene within six minutes of the Triple Zero calls.

School staff followed normal evacuation procedures, moving students and teachers away from the fire while firefighters worked to contain it.

Fire and Rescue NSW said crews used carbon dioxide (CO2) fire extinguishers to knock down the fire, limiting damage to the air conditioning unit and preventing the blaze from spreading to nearby structures.

There were no reported injuries to students, staff or firefighters, and the school began returning students to buildings not impacted by the incident.

NSW Police Force and NSW Ambulance also attended the incident.
