newy.com.au – Fire crews were called to a car fire at Ferodale near Medowie about 9am, the burning vehicle sparking a grass fire that spread across about three hectares and volunteers from Karuah and Raymond Terrace RFS assisted Medowie at the scene.

Medowie Rural Fire Brigade said the fire was fully extinguished by crews, and calm conditions helped stop it from spreading. “Thankfully there is no wind today, otherwise it could have been a lot worse,” the brigade said.

Photos posted with the update showed the shell of a burnt-out vehicle in bushland, with nearby ground blackened by fire.

Crews from other brigades were later patrolling the fireground, identifying and putting out hotspots and blacking out the area.

The brigade warned there would still be “a lot of smoke laying low in the area today” as the weather cooled and there was no wind to shift it as fires continue to burn at Oyster Cove and Nerong.

People with respiratory issues were urged to consider staying indoors or wearing P2 or HEPA masks to reduce the risk of smoke inhalation. Residents were also asked to call Triple Zero (000) immediately if they saw fires, not just smoke, that were not being attended by emergency services.
