Alleged drink-driver arrested twice in under two hours after Hunter pursuits
newy.com.au – A 24-year-old man is due in court after police allege he was caught drink-driving twice in under two hours.
Officers from the Port Stephens-Hunter Police District said the man was first stopped on the New England Highway at East Maitland and later re-arrested after being detected driving again while suspended.
Police were patrolling the New England Highway about 12.30am on Saturday 27 December 2025 when they saw a ute being driven dangerously. The vehicle was stopped on Lawes Street and the driver was arrested after returning a positive roadside breath test.
He was taken to Maitland Police Station, where a secondary breath analysis allegedly returned a reading of 0.166. The man was charged with driving with high-range PCA, issued a court attendance notice and had his licence suspended.
Less than two hours later, police said they saw the same vehicle being driven on the New England Highway at East Maitland about 2am. When the driver allegedly failed to stop as directed, a pursuit was initiated.
The pursuit continued through Taylor Avenue at Thornton, where road spikes were deployed. A short time later the ute stopped on Victoria Street and the same driver was arrested at the scene.
He was again taken to Maitland Police Station, where police allege a breath analysis returned a reading of 0.130. The man was charged with police pursuit, not stop, drive recklessly, driving while licence suspended, and driving with middle-range PCA, and was refused bail to appear at Bail Division Court 2 on Saturday.
