newy.com.au – Emergency services closed one eastbound lane of Newcastle Road at Wallsend on Sunday night following a multi-vehicle crash opposite the BP service station.

The lane closure affected traffic on a key road into the city and prompted renewed road safety calls online, a number of residents describing the area as a frequent trouble spot.

The incident happened around 9:10pm and the footage shared was filmed between 9.16pm and 9.30pm.

Several agencies including NSW Police, Fire & Rescue NSW Wallsend and tow trucks, no ambulances were spotted at the intersection.

A resident living on the corner reported hearing a heavy impact: “heard the crash and felt it through the wall”, and “hit the tree super hard”.

The owner of the Holden Commodore involved in the crash said the vehicle was “written off sadly”  and “we are all okay”.

Hannah’s Blue Butterflies Road Safety Awareness Inc urged drivers to “be vigilant and share the roads safely and responsibly” and thanked emergency services.

Residents called for better enforcement at the intersection, including calls for red-light cameras, while some pushed back that cameras would not change driver behaviour.
