newy.com.au – A 29-year-old man has been charged and refused bail after an alleged shooting at Mayfield in October, NSW Police said.

Emergency services were called about 11.50pm on Sunday 5 October 2025 to a unit on Elizabeth Street, Mayfield, after reports a woman had been shot.

Officers from Newcastle City Police District found a 19-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to her leg, police said. She was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.

A crime scene was established and detectives began investigating the circumstances of the incident, police said.

Those inquiries led to a search warrant being executed about 9.25am on Thursday 11 December 2025 at a unit on Cecil Avenue, Waratah.

Officers attempted to engage with a man at the address, but police said he barricaded himself inside the unit. A perimeter was set up by specialist officers, including police negotiators and members of the Tactical Operations Unit and Tactical Operations Regional Support.

About 10.05am, police said the man exited the unit allegedly armed with a knife and was arrested a short time later after a Taser and bean bag rounds were deployed. He was assessed by NSW Ambulance paramedics and taken to Waratah Police Station.

Three dogs were later seized by council rangers after they emerged from the unit and attacked both a police officer and a police dog, police said.

During searches of the man’s bag and the unit, police said they located and seized items including electronics and two grams of methamphetamine.

Police said an outstanding warrant was executed and the man was charged with armed with intent commit indictable offence, reckless grievous bodily harm (DV), acquire etc firearm subject to prohibition order, possess unauthorised prohibited firearm, possess prohibited drug, and affray.

He was refused bail to appear before Bail Division Court 2 on Friday 12 December 2025.
