newy.com.au – Motorists travelling through Newcastle West and Maitland will face changed overnight traffic conditions from Sunday 23 November 2025 as road resurfacing and maintenance work is carried out on Parry Street and the New England Highway.
The projects, being delivered by City of Newcastle on behalf of Transport for NSW in Newcastle West and directly by Transport for NSW in Maitland, are aimed at improving safety and extending the life of key sections of the road network, with lane closures, reduced speed limits and detours to be in place while the work is completed at night.
In Newcastle West, City of Newcastle will carry out asphalt resurfacing work on Parry Street between Tudor Street and Stewart Avenue. The work, funded by Transport for NSW, will run overnight from 8pm to 5am from Monday 24 November and is expected to be completed in two nights, weather permitting.
Transport for NSW said the resurfacing would improve safety for all road users along the busy section of Parry Street. Traffic control, a single lane closure, alternative stop/slow arrangements and a reduced speed limit of 40km/h will be in place for the safety of workers and motorists.
Road closures will be required on Wood and Denison streets, with a short detour for vehicles entering or exiting via Parry Street. Motorists are being urged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time and follow the directions of traffic controllers and signage through the area.
At Maitland, Transport for NSW will carry out essential maintenance on the New England Highway and Les Darcy Drive between the New England Highway roundabout and George Street. The work includes the replacement of concrete slabs along the highway to ensure what the agency describes as a longer lasting and safer road.
This Maitland project will be carried out at night from 7pm to 5am from Sunday 23 November and is expected to take about four weeks to complete, weather permitting. Oversize overmass (OSOM) vehicles will be able to travel through the work area while the maintenance is underway.
As in Newcastle West, traffic control, single lane closures and a reduced speed limit of 40km/h will apply on the New England Highway and Les Darcy Drive. Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions and follow the directions of signs and traffic controllers throughout both work sites.
In a statement, Transport for NSW thanked road users for their cooperation while the projects are delivered, saying it “thanks motorists for their patience during this time”.
Drivers can find more information on the Newcastle West and Maitland works, including live updates and any changes to timing, by visiting the Live Traffic NSW website, using the Live Traffic NSW app or calling 132 701.
