newy.com.au – Motorists using Cormorant Road at Kooragang will face changed overnight traffic conditions on Tuesday 18 and Wednesday 19 November 2025 as resurfacing works close and restrict access to Egret Street across two stages.

Transport for NSW said the City of Newcastle would carry out asphalt resurfacing on its behalf between 7pm and 5am AEDT on both nights to maintain the road surface while limiting disruption to daytime traffic. The works are expected to be finished over two nights, weather permitting.

The project will be delivered in two stages, with different traffic arrangements in place for each phase.

In the first stage, Egret Street will be closed to all traffic where it meets Cormorant Road. Westbound drivers on Cormorant Road wanting to reach Egret Street will be detoured via Teal Street and Raven Street. Southbound traffic on Egret Street will be directed east along Raven Street and then back via Teal Street to return to Cormorant Road.

During the second stage of the operation, right turns from Cormorant Road into Egret Street will not be permitted. Motorists will instead need to continue along Cormorant Road, detour onto Windmill Road to make a U-turn, then rejoin Cormorant Road and turn left into Egret Street.

Traffic control measures will be in place throughout the works, including lane closures, alternating stop/slow traffic conditions and a reduced speed limit of 40km/h. Transport for NSW has advised motorists to drive to the conditions and follow the directions of signs and traffic controllers for the safety of workers and road users.

Oversize and over mass (OSOM) operators have been asked to contact the project team on UHF channel 19 so they can be escorted through the work site. Heavy vehicles, including OSOM vehicles under four metres travelling under permit, will continue to be guided through the area as required and are not expected to be significantly affected by the temporary arrangements.

Transport for NSW has thanked road users for their patience while the work is carried out and urged drivers to allow extra travel time, particularly during the start and end of the night shifts.

Further information about the works and live updates on traffic conditions are available via the Live Traffic NSW website and app or by calling 132 701. Motorists can receive notifications direct to their phone by searching for “Kooragang” in the Live Traffic app, selecting the relevant incident and tapping “Follow”.
