newy.com.au – Two men died and two others were injured after a maroon Toyota Corolla crashed into a power pole and caught fire on Maitland Road, Mayfield East, about 11.15pm on Saturday 30 August 2025, NSW Police said.

Police said the fatal crash involved four men understood to be students in Australia, and officers are liaising with officials from the High Commission of Bangladesh. Detectives are investigating the circumstances of the crash and have appealed for public assistance.

Emergency services were called after the Corolla left the road and struck the pole, igniting on impact. According to police, passers-by assisted the 24-year-old driver and the rear driver’s-side passenger, a 19-year-old man, from the car, while two other occupants remained trapped.

Fire and Rescue NSW crews arrived and removed the two trapped passengers. Police said both men, believed to be in their 20s, were taken to John Hunter Hospital with critical burns and have since died.

NSW Ambulance said six road ambulances responded and an aeromedical team was brought in by helicopter. Paramedics treated four patients at the scene before transporting them to John Hunter Hospital.

Police said the driver remained under guard in hospital on Sunday undergoing treatment for minor injuries. The second man who was helped from the vehicle was also taken to hospital.

Officers from Newcastle City Police District are conducting inquiries into the cause of the crash.
