newy.com.au – A washing machine fire sparked an emergency response at a home on Wilkinson Avenue in Birmingham Gardens just before 10pm on Tuesday, 22 July 2025.

Fire and Rescue NSW Station 484 Wallsend was called to the scene, where crews found the appliance alight inside the residence. Firefighters acted swiftly to extinguish the flames, successfully stopping the fire from spreading and averting serious damage or injury.

The incident has prompted renewed warnings about the fire risks associated with household appliances. Fire and Rescue NSW highlighted that lint accumulation, electrical malfunctions and overheating components are common causes of fires in washing machines and dryers.

The service is urging the public to follow basic safety measures, including cleaning lint filters, servicing appliances as per manufacturer guidelines, avoiding overloading, and not operating machines when unattended. A spokesperson said working smoke alarms and quick emergency responses are critical in preventing property loss and protecting lives.
