newy.com.au – The viewing platform at Blacksmiths Beach will be dismantled from Tuesday 22 July following significant coastal erosion in the area. The structure, located off Maneela Street, has been closed since last week after a series of storm events caused substantial sand loss approximately 700 metres north of the surf club.
Lake Macquarie City Council Manager Assets Karen Partington said the erosion had begun to compromise the stability of the platform, leading to its closure on safety grounds. “Our engineers inspected the site on Friday and due to the extent of erosion we’ve unfortunately made the decision to remove the platform completely,” she said.
Council crews will disassemble the platform and place it in storage while options are assessed for a new location nearby. “The platform remains largely intact, so we will hopefully be able to relocate it in the near future without too much additional work,” Ms Partington said.
An alternative accessible lookout remains open around 800 metres to the south, in front of the Swansea Belmont Surf Life Saving Club off Gommera Street. The dismantling process is expected to be finalised by the end of July.
