newy.com.au – A new steel arch pedestrian and cyclist bridge has been installed at the Jesmond interchange of the Newcastle Inner City Bypass, marking a major milestone in the Rankin Park to Jesmond upgrade. The bridge was lifted into place overnight using a 400-tonne crane and was installed within several hours, according to Transport for NSW.

The structure will link shared paths on Newcastle Road and Illoura Street, allowing pedestrians and cyclists to travel safely over the on and off ramps and beneath the bypass once the interchange at Jesmond opens to traffic.

Transport for NSW Regional Director North Anna Zycki confirmed the bridge’s installation followed other recent developments in the project. “May saw the opening of the permanent right-hand turn for motorists travelling west on Newcastle Road onto the northern lanes of the bypass towards University Drive,” she said. “This has removed one of the sets of traffic lights, helping improve traffic flow in the area as construction continues.”

Significant progress has also been made at the southern interchange, where the intersection of Lookout Road and McCaffrey Drive has been moved onto a new bridge. This change has shifted traffic onto a newly signalised intersection and the future northbound off-ramp, which will remain in use until the bypass is completed.

“This final section of the Newcastle Inner City Bypass from Rankin Park to Jesmond is just part of a massive package of road projects across the Hunter region,” Ms Zycki said. “Along with the M1 Pacific Motorway extension to Raymond Terrace, Hexham Straight Widening and Singleton Bypass, Hunter motorists can look forward to safer, more reliable journeys for all road users, and saving businesses time and money.”
