newy.com.au – Construction has officially commenced on a new $3.1 million amenities building at Max McMahon Oval in Rutherford, with Maitland City Council breaking ground on the project earlier this week.

The development is being co-funded by a $3 million contribution from the Australian Government, with Maitland City Council covering the remaining costs. The project aims to enhance facilities for local sporting groups and improve accessibility across the site.

The new amenities building will feature four unisex changerooms, accessible public toilets, a canteen, first aid and referee rooms, a timekeeping room, tiered seating, a covered outdoor area, and an accessible entryway.

Maitland Mayor Philip Penfold said the project will significantly benefit local users, especially the Maitland Saints AFL club. “We worked very closely with Maitland Saints who did a lot of the leg work to secure this grant funding and helped us come up with the most suitable design, and we’re proud to see work is now underway,” Mayor Penfold said. “These upgraded amenities will be a huge boost to the club and the wider community, while improving accessibility and supporting greater participation in sport.”

Federal Member for Paterson, Meryl Swanson MP, also welcomed the development. “It’s great to see our 2022 election commitments coming to life with this upgrade at Max McMahon Oval in Rutherford,” Ms Swanson said. “This project is the result of the Australian Government working hand in hand with local Council and sporting groups to deliver the facilities our community needs to thrive.”

The existing amenities building will be demolished to make room for the new facility, with temporary amenities provided on site during the construction period. Works are expected to be completed by January 2026, subject to weather conditions.
