Newcastle Man Charged Over String of Alleged Break-Ins and Assault on Police

newy.com.au – A 27-year-old man is due to appear in Parramatta Local Court today, 1 July 2025, after being charged with 14 offences related to property crime, traffic matters, and the alleged assault of a police officer in Newcastle.

Police were called to a residence on Harle Street in Hamilton South around 1.20am following reports of a break and enter, where a laptop was reportedly stolen. Shortly afterwards, officers attended a licensed premises on Railway Street in Merewether and located a man believed to be involved.

During a search of the man’s bag, he allegedly became aggressive and was restrained. Officers reportedly discovered a laptop suspected to be the one stolen from the Hamilton South home.

The man was arrested and is believed to be linked to additional break and enter incidents across Merewether, Hamilton, and Hamilton South. As he was being escorted to the police vehicle, he allegedly resisted, kicked at officers and bit one officer’s hand, causing bleeding. Police deployed OC spray and secured the man before transporting him to Newcastle Police Station.

He was charged with multiple offences including two counts of aggravated break and enter and commit serious indictable offence, assaulting a police officer causing actual bodily harm, resisting arrest, giving a false name and address, larceny, and being in possession of suspected stolen goods.

Bail was refused ahead of his court appearance later today.
