newy.com.au – Maitland locals are being encouraged to have their say on the city’s future, with expressions of interest now open for four newly created strategic advisory committees. Maitland City Council is seeking community members and stakeholder organisation representatives to help shape key planning and policy directions as part of a broader push to deepen community involvement in long-term decision-making.

The committees are a product of recent governance reforms and will play an advisory role, offering insights and feedback to Council staff and elected members. While they won’t hold decision-making power, their contribution is expected to influence projects and strategies aligned with “Maitland +10”, the city’s new Community Strategic Plan adopted in 2024.

Mayor Philip Penfold said the initiative offers locals a meaningful opportunity to contribute to how Maitland grows and evolves. “These committees link us directly with the people and organisations shaping life in our city,” he said. “It’s about ensuring our plans are informed by those with on-the-ground knowledge, whether that’s through lived experience, professional expertise or community involvement.”

The four committees focus on city planning and design, community and culture, environmental sustainability, and sport and recreation. Each group will include up to three community representatives, two from stakeholder organisations, two councillors, and relevant Council staff. Meetings will be held quarterly, with members appointed for a two-year term ending in June 2027.

Applicants must either live, work or study in the Maitland LGA, or be formally nominated by a relevant organisation. Council is seeking individuals with relevant experience or qualifications, as well as a demonstrated commitment to constructive community engagement. Expressions of interest close at 11.59pm on Sunday 29 June 2025. Full details, including nomination forms and committee terms, are available at mait.city/Committees-EOI.
