newy.com.au – Newcastle detectives are investigating a frightening home invasion in Mayfield last week, where a shotgun blast was fired into a residence during the early hours of the morning.

Just before 4am on Friday, 30 May, police responded to emergency calls reporting a gunshot on Bull Street. Upon arrival, officers from the Newcastle City Police District secured the property and launched a forensic investigation. Damage to the front door confirmed a firearm had been discharged at close range, believed to be from a shotgun.

A sweep of the area uncovered several concerning items, including an unspent bullet, a knife and a set of knuckledusters. These have been collected for forensic analysis as part of the ongoing investigation.

Authorities believe the shooting occurred during a home invasion, though the exact motive remains unclear. The incident is being investigated under Strike Force Barkov, with detectives working to piece together the events of that night.

Police are urging anyone who may have seen suspicious activity or has information that could assist the investigation to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a report online. All reports will be handled in strict confidence.
