newy.com.au – Newcastle has rolled out the red carpet for a royal takeover of a different kind, with the internationally acclaimed SIX The Musical now lighting up the Civic Theatre stage in a three-week run that kicked off on Thursday, 10 April 2025 and continues until Sunday, 4 May 2025.
A modern retelling of the lives of the six wives of Henry VIII, the energetic pop musical has drawn crowds from across the country, with Newcastle becoming the first non-capital city on the production’s Australian tour. The show has arrived fresh from a sell-out season in New Zealand, with previous stops in Melbourne, Brisbane, and Sydney.
Newcastle Lord Mayor Ross Kerridge welcomed the cast and encouraged locals and visitors alike to experience the show in the historic Civic Theatre. “Audiences have shown strong support, which is attracting interest from producers to include Newcastle in future touring schedules,” he said.
Councillor Jenny Barrie, who chairs the City of Newcastle’s Community and Culture Advisory Committee, noted that the city has seen a significant rise in demand for top-tier theatrical performances. “The Civic Theatre has become a major drawcard, with around 35 per cent of SIX ticket holders being first-time attendees,” she said.
The musical, created by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, transforms the historical queens into bold, pop-icon versions of themselves, from Catherine of Aragon to Catherine Parr, with each telling their story through high-energy songs and commanding performances.
Producer Louise Withers called the show a global phenomenon, now enjoyed by more than 3.5 million people annually. “We’re thrilled SIX has made it to Newcastle, and we’re excited to welcome both die-hard fans and new theatregoers to this extraordinary production,” she said.
Since its 2019 debut on London’s West End, SIX has picked up 35 international awards, including two Tonys for Best Original Score and Best Costume Design, as well as a Grammy nomination for Best Musical Theatre Album.
SIX continues at the Civic Theatre until Sunday, 4 May 2025. For more information or to grab tickets, head to civictheatrenewcastle.com.au.
