The Newcastle Surf Life Saving Club has been awarded funding as part of the NSW Government’s $5.4 million Surf Club Facility Program for 2024/25. This initiative aims to modernise surf lifesaving facilities across the state, enhancing safety and accessibility for both volunteers and the public.

The planned transformation of the club’s gear shed is set to improve safety, extend equipment longevity, and boost operational efficiency. These enhancements will benefit club members, volunteers, and the broader community by facilitating quicker emergency responses and providing superior lifesaving services.

The Surf Club Facility Program allocated grants of up to $1 million to 38 clubs for the upgrade, restoration, or construction of surf lifesaving facilities. Projects that promote participation among women and girls, people with disabilities, First Nations peoples, culturally and linguistically diverse communities, and LGBTQIA+ individuals were prioritised.

Tim Crakanthorp MP, State Member for Newcastle, commended the club’s efforts, stating, “Newcastle Surf Life Saving volunteers proved once again this summer that they are the unsung heroes of our community, protecting locals and visitors in the water. This grant will contribute towards the development of modern, fit-for-purpose facilities that enable local surf lifesavers to better protect the community and continue to deliver a world-class service. I congratulate them on receiving a grant and look forward to the benefits these projects will offer the Newcastle community.”
