newy.com.au – Local sports in Newcastle’s western suburbs are set for a major upgrade, with a $3 million investment announced for Upper Reserve in Wallsend, aimed at enhancing field conditions and accessibility year-round.
On Wednesday, 2 April 2025, Federal Member for Newcastle Sharon Claydon welcomed Minister for the Arts and Leader of the House Tony Burke MP to Wallsend to share the news. The funding, promised by the Albanese Labor Government, will be used to install new drainage and irrigation systems, along with upgrades to the car park – all of which are expected to improve reliability and usability of the grounds regardless of weather.
According to Ms Claydon, the investment responds to long-standing concerns from families and sporting clubs about waterlogged fields and game cancellations. “Improving the condition and accessibility of our local sporting fields is essential for both the physical health and social wellbeing of our community,” she said.
The upgrades aim to keep playing surfaces healthy and safe for users of all ages, while reducing cancellations and maintenance disruptions caused by wet weather. The initiative also aligns with the Government’s commitment to deliver election pledges under the Commonwealth Grants Rules and Principles.
Ms Claydon added, “This $3 million commitment will ensure Upper Reserve in Wallsend remains a premier venue for sports activities, no matter the season.”
The announcement has been welcomed as a significant win for grassroots sport in the region.
