Mayfield Man Charged with Kidnapping and Assault After Dramatic Police Operation

newy.com.au – A 30-year-old man is facing serious domestic violence and kidnapping charges following a drawn-out police operation at a unit complex in Mayfield on Sunday, 23 March 2025.

Emergency services were called to Woodbine Street around 10:50am after receiving reports of a domestic incident. On arrival, police were informed that a 66-year-old woman had allegedly been assaulted by a man known to her.

Attempts by officers to arrest the man were unsuccessful when he allegedly refused to cooperate and made threats towards police, refusing to leave the unit. The situation escalated, prompting a large-scale emergency response involving specialist tactical police, NSW Ambulance paramedics, and Fire and Rescue NSW.

The standoff lasted several hours, with authorities working to de-escalate the situation. At approximately 5:15pm, the man exited the unit and was arrested without further incident.

He was taken to Newcastle Police Station where he was formally charged with four offences:

• Hinder/resist law enforcement officer in execution of duty

• Destroy or damage property – domestic violence related

• Contravene prohibition/restriction in an Apprehended Violence Order – domestic violence related

• Kidnap with intent to commit a serious indictable offence, occasioning actual bodily harm – domestic violence related

The accused was refused bail and is scheduled to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Monday, 24 March 2025.
